And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good . . . And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
Genesis 1:3-5
God created the Earth in 6 days and rested on day 7. Have you ever wondered why He took 7 days? Why did He not do it all on day 1? He is all-powerful, all-knowing, and ever-present. He willed himself to be. He speaks and at His Word creation happens. Soooo . . . why not just utter “let there be all . . .” and have all there is to be, exist all in one utterance?
Maybe God wanted to teach us something even in the way he created the heavens and the Earth. Perhaps from the first passage of scripture penned, he began to offer counsel and wisdom to us, his image bearers.
What if the message of Genesis 1 for us to apply today is this: Just do light! Today, you do not have to check off every item on the list. You don’t have to graduate, buy a house, and have kids on “day 1.” You don’t have to apply, get the job and the promotion on “day 1.” You don’t have to get his attention, his number, and his last name on “day 1.” Whoever told you that you must pass, master, get it, move it, make it, and be it all today, lied to you. God demonstrated for us the value of pace; the beauty of margin; the gift of pause; the saneness of order.
Stop the hustle. Mute the “now or never.” Toss the ticking clock. Remind yourself that today you are only to do today’s task. You are not expected by your Creator to do the work of days 1 through 7 on day 1.
Maybe you are like me and you’re thinking, “Girl, at that rate I’m going, I’ll be ‘doing light’ all week and end up unemployed, behind, more overwhelmed, alone, and frustrated.”
Don’t confuse embracing this “one day at a time” concept with a move towards procrastination or a lack of productivity or a decline in follow-through. This is more about your mindset and less about your performance.
Each daily task God started during creation, He completed. AND He looked and saw that it was good.
Are you good? Is there peace attached to this next endeavor? Is there joy over there? Is God with you? Is it His will and plan guiding you on to “day 2” or is it that comparison game buzzer going off propelling you to move forward?
Before you move on to the next thing, be it a domestic to-do, a goal at work, a shift in acquaintances . . . before you tell those people “yes,” ask yourself, “have I completed what I’ve already started and is it good? Am I good?”
If so, move on to day 2. If not, my sweet sister, today . . . Just. Do. Light.

Love this message! I have learned that not every opportunity is for me. I don’t have to say yes to everything. I pray and ask God for guidance and wisdom in choosing participation. I pray I will shine His light in all my words and actions. Have a wonderful and blessed week!
